Thought I would do a review after a finished the Vampire Diaries : Stefan's Diaries trilogy but there is still plenty of time until Craving comes out so after finishing Origins and Bloodlust , I decided to write a review.
The first thing you need to know is that the book is a tie-in to the CW's show but there are also some differences but not big ones.Tie-ins usually can be a pain in ass if they miss something or rewrite various events however Stefan's Diaries doesn't "do" any of that, as said it manages to stay true to the show. The only complain I have at this part is the way Lexi and Stefan meet in New Orleans instead back in Mystic Falls like it was on the show but I think the book version is more suitable.
The first book presents from Stefan's point of view(as the title suggests as well) the events during 1864 while he still was human.Stefan being in the center all the time does not mean that other well known or familiar characters are in the background like Damon Salvatore,Johnathan Gilbert,Katherine Pierce etc, as for a matter of fact, Katherine is very much indeed an organic part of the first book as he is the main reason Stefan's life changes in the first place.Stefan describes Katherine as an angel who turns out to be the exact opposite of everything he ever believed she is.Katherine had a dark secret that would have endangered pretty much everyones life if it came to daylight which it did at the end of the book. She is a vampire together with almost half of the locals from the town.Stefan and Damon both fell in love with her but she toyed with them eventually leading up both from drinking her blood and turning them into the same creatures she was after she was captured by Giuseppe Salvatore. The brothers have joined forces to help their love but they will soon shot and killed which started the process of turning them.Stefan eventually gave into his hunger and confronted his father which lead up of killing him and drinking his blood.Origins is a really good start for those who haven't watched the show before but read the previous L.J Smith series and also a good starting point for new readers as well.
RAZOR rating : 8 (out of 10)
The second book was much more darker than the first one.Stefan and Damon now both vampires , are heading towards New Orleans. The context is also interesting.Damon being the "good" brother who tries to stay innocent while Stefan is actually much worse than Damon will ever become. He kills whom he wants whenever he wants not paying attention that his actions can have serious consequences.Arriving to New Orleans, Damon get's sick of his brother's way of behaving and murdering and they split ways.Stefan finally meets Lexi with whom he'll become best friends, and her crew who will help Stefan conquer his hunger and redeem himself.Damon meanwhile get's caught by a circus group who use him in cage fights to make money out of it.Stefan plans to rescue him because against all of their differences at the end of the day they're still brothers, they're still family. What he doesn't count is that he falls in love with the daughter of the man who kidnapped Damon.Choosing between Damon and Callie Gallagher is decision he is not sure of.If he saves Damon than what is the guarantee that he will not kill everyone because he saw how he changed in that place. Eventually Callie reveals to Stefan that he knows that Damon is his brother and he is a vampire as well but despite that he helps him free Damon who repays her by killing her and beating up Stefan pretty bad by making a promise that he will turn Stefan's life a leaving hell and avenging all those murders he commited. What he doesn't realise that he became the very same creature he sworn to destroy.
RAZOR rating: 9.5 (out of 10)
The third book will be the closing chapter of Stefan's Diaries which will hit stores this May.
